Some years are interesting. Others are pivotal. The former play host to fascinating moments. Major events happen; crucial protagonists emerge; trends start and institutions fall. They provide talking points and teachable moments and sooner or later a return to the status quo. The latter shift paradigms and shed frameworks. Whether they mark a critical mass of incremental developments or a sudden eruption of unforeseen circumstances is debatable. Either way when a pivotal year draws to a close nothing will be the same again. Was 1968 pivotal or just interesting? Did new voices have the opportunity to expand on old truths, or did new truths come into play? Did a generation that had unrivalled access to media and an uncontrollable urge for memoir, really change the world or just have a great time?
