Amanda Michalopoulou

She studied French Literature in Athens and Journalism in Paris. She published her first book, a collection of five short stories, in 1994, called Outside Life Is Colourful, and she has contributed to several anthologies.

Her first novel, Wishbone Memories, was awarded the 1996 novel prize of the literary magazine Diavazo. Her novel, How Many Times Can You Bear It, with its title taken from Kafka´s journals, is the story of a middle-aged Greek woman pursuing her Czech lover across Europe, a parody on road novels, stories of unhappy love, and tales of the supernatural, as well as the idea of a United Europe whose citizens are unable to communicate with each other. She often writes of a main character with a literary background in search of his or her identity.

She has published several novels and collections of short stories, and she received the International Literature Award from the National Endowment for the Arts for her collection of short stories titled I’d Like. She has also written children’s books.

Amanda Michalopoulou lives in Athens.
