Zbigniew Machej

Born in 1958 in Cieszyn, Poland, Zbigniew Machej is a poet and translator of Czech and American poetry.
He studied at Jagiellonian University in Krakow and graduated in 1987 with a degree in religion. His writing is known for its surrealist, ironic, and often erotic style. He published Connoisseurs, Lovers and Assassins before going missing in 1984, and eventually reemerged with his poems appearing in underground and exile magazines until he was able to return to Warsaw. He has published several poem collections, including his first, Gourmands, Lovers, and Paying Murderers in 1984 and his most recent, a collection for children entitled The Adventures of Nature: That is, Playfulness and the Misery of Animals in the World of People in 2008.
Machej currently lives in Bratislava and works as the director of the Polish Institute.
