Pulitzer Prize laureate Michael Cunningham was born in 1952, in Cincinnati, Ohio, and grew up in Pasadena, Califoirnia. An American classic, his work is a form of poetry—“a genre-bending, haunting, transormative ode to life.”

The author takes risks with his readers—who are often held suspended over a guillotine’s blade. The criminal becomes a smile which never fades away.
